Frequently Asked Questions

You likely have a lot of questions; I sure did as I began to retreat! Here are a few common ones. Please contact me if you would like to ask a few more.

What exactly do you DO on a retreat?

What would you like to do? Take a nap? Read? Pray? Walk around? Make some plans? Since this is a personal retreat, you can do what you like! “Getaway with God” has some sample schedules, but it really is all up to you.

Is silence important?

Maybe? If you need to go silent for your own focus, zip up and jump in. Some retreats benefit from silence but it’s not for everyone.

On that theme, do I need to turn off my phone?

Do you? Usually, we know ourselves well enough to know if a phone is a distraction. I do recommend setting up an away message and perhaps asking your loved ones to only contract you in an emergency. You might use your phone to play music or listen to a podcast but mindless scrolling or shopping will likely pull you out of the retreat.

Should I fast?

Ask Jesus about that one. I usually don’t but have retreated with other women who do.

Can I retreat with a friend?

Sure! There are lots of ways to tandem retreat. You might travel together or dine together but spend the rest of the time alone. Sharing a room is less than ideal for a retreat as it can quickly turn into a sleepover. If you are retreating with a friend, have a conversation ahead of time about what each of your expectations are for the time.

I don’t know if I can afford a retreat.

It can help to shift your perspective from an expense to an investment. From both the time and money angle, getting alone with God will provide dividends to live on the rest of your life. Trust God to provide.
